When I was in high school, we had a small pool with a diving board. I was 6’3″ and the pool was 8 feet deep – you just about immediately hit bottom. While I’m not sure how any of us survived, the diving board was a big hit with every kid that saw it. For legal reasons, I suppose, diving boards are very rare these days. In fact, there are only two diving boards in Austin pools that I could find – one at Barton Springs and the other at Garrison Pool (at Garrison Park).
Garrison Park is pretty nice and features the standard amenities – playscape, basketball courts, picnic tables, etc. There are also several cool geocaches in the area. But the pool is the thing worth coming for. The boys just jump off that diving board over and over. I will tell you that the pool can get quite crowded over the summer, as the YMCA runs summer camps at the park. However, YMCA campers aren’t allowed to go off the diving board, so typically the line isn’t too long. While the pool’s not free like the fairly close Dick Nichols Pool (see the City of Austin Pool Fees page for current fees), I think it’s worth the price of admission.
In addition to the pool, this wonderfully shaded park offers a jogging trail along with plenty of sand and grass for running. Some of the other Garrison Park features include:
- BBQ Pits
- Baseball Fields
- Basketball Courts
- Picnic Pavilion
- Picnic Tables
- Playgrounds (big and small)
- Softball Fields

“Like my brother said the pool is partly full most of the time, but other than that it’s great, the water is clean, there are lifeguards, and of course a diving board. There are tall oak trees covering a part of the area and the are sun chairs to lay on, it has swimming lanes for more experienced swimmers, a shallow area for the kiddies, and a giant area to swim and relax.”Big J *Unedited
“This pool is great because there is a diving board, swimming lanes, a HUGE swimming area and a shady area covered by trees. It can be crowded because camps are there 24/7 and when one leaves another comes.”Big C *Unedited
